MEET THE ASPIRING CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Hi, I'm Darlene Sibusiso Chinogurei, a Bachelor of Science Psychology student at Curtin University Dubai. I am passionate about mental health and interested in pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology. I grew up in a small town known as Marondera located in Zimbabwe. At a young age, I was taught to care for others, and it has become part of me since then. My passion for Clinical Psychology grew due to attending events with well-renowned Clinical Psychologists. That is when I knew being in the field of psychology was for me. Due to my exposure to different mental health professionals, it made me realise that mental health awareness is crucial to all people, irrespective of their cultural background or ethnicity. Throughout my academic journey, I have taken internships, training programs and volunteering experiences to apply my academic knowledge and psychological principles in real-life situations. I have learnt skills that have helped me obtain the relevant experience to become a Clinical Psychologist. These skills have been obtained throughout my learning experience at Curtin University Dubai, various internships and mental health initiatives. I have learnt that effective communication has played a major role in building solid relationships with clients either in the mental health industry or the corporate world. Thank you for visiting my website and I hope you learn something valuable that will help you in your journey of mental health!

EDUCATION

In September 2022, I started my Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Curtin University Dubai.  I am glad to say I am part of the first Psychology batch of students who started their journey with Curtin Dubai. I chose to study Psychology because of my interest in human behaviour and desire to help people at both an emotional and personal level. I enjoy studying Psychology because it helps me to learn a lot about myself and others thereby enhancing my communication skills. This is an interesting field because I learn something new each day. The day I was inspired to become a Clinical psychologist was when I met Dr Sonakshi, a well-renowned psychologist who was my mentor and professor. She explained about Psychology and how the mental health industry needs more professionals. I became more curious about Psychology and decided to pursue a career in Clinical Psychology. At Curtin, I was awarded best performance for contributing to the success of Mental Health Day in 2023. This opened up opportunities for me to attend webinars for free and have mental health professionals reach out to me for internship opportunities. In my 3 years of studying Psychology, I have learnt that stepping out into the real world and doing practical work has helped me to get good grades.

EXPERIENCE

Throughout my academic journey at Curtin University Dubai, I have had the opportunity to carry out internships in the field of mental health that enhanced my communication skills, active listening and relationship building. During my internship with Naikan Institute as a Psychology Research intern, I contributed to the research on mental health topics that could be used on their blog strengthening my research skills. Additionally, my role as a Student Ambassador at Neolth taught me how to make social media blog posts on any mental health topics in modern-day Psychology topics such as work-life balance, modern-day parenting, emotional intelligence and trauma. This was a new challenge for me as I learnt new skills on how to make content that is both meaningful and visually appealing. As a Child Psychology intern at 3E Worldwide, I had the opportunity to help children from grades 1-8 discover their career goals by writing comprehension questions related to different fields of work so that the children would understand different career pathways.
Aside from my internships, I also participated in volunteering opportunities with EduScan Group for People of Determination enhancing my desire to help people.
